Was there any kind of music associated with the Mods — OK just reread it and see “The Who”. I always find these very much English tribal “feuds” fascinating. I suspect there is an equivalent in US society but I have no idea what it would be?? Maybe because the US wasn’t as “class” conscious, it came out in a different way than stylistic dress and attitude?
I think it has more to do with culture than class, though the two do overlap. Plus, Britain is a very small place with competing cultures crammed into a tiny island. The US has rival cultures but they're often linked to a distinct place. Surfer dudes from California can't easily invade the territory of cowboys from Montana by getting on a scooter and riding for a couple of hours. England especially is a pressure cooker.
Yes, and geographically farther apart. I do think of “West Side Story” though — and that is my only example other than I know that many of the bigger cities do have “gang wars” which is maybe the current equivalent of this??
It still seems that Mods vs Rockers was different since these were two styles in conflict. Gang wars seem to be about money and power, and therefore the territory the gangs control.

Yes, two styles in conflict which is why it really does seem a quintessentially English thing …
